Hi, I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction please. I have the marriage certificate of my great great grandmother, Catherine Adams who married in the parish of Aughavale, town of Westport, Ireland, with the civil registration taking place in Roscommon 7th January 1862. The record states that her father is one John Adams, Inspecting Commander of Coast Guards, I would be really greatful if anyone could tell me how to find out more about him. Thank you, Andrea |

Welcome Andrea I've never tried to trace such a senior officer, but from a quick look at the records in ADM 175 it looks to be similar to most other CG Men, accept the Inspecting Officers look to be at the very front of the records, and not at the CG Station. Can I suggest you read at my initial response on the William Enright thread. I did look at ADM 175/19 (page 12 of 472) and found John Adams. It appears he was transferred from Rutland to Killibegs on 1 March 1862. Since there is no further transfer mentioned, you must assume he remained in this location within the next Establishment Book. Regards Martin |

A relative has just been to Belfast and uncovered another marriage for John Adam. he married Jeanetta Maria Rawlins, nee Clarke, in Glenarm 1826, one of the witnesses was William Adam, a possible brother. Where would I look in coastguard records to see if William was there please. Thank you Andrea |

Andrea I've looked at the early Irish Nomination Books and there is no William, and unfortunately the English Nomination Books do not start until 1827. Without a CG Station to start at its rather a large task to try every station in the hope of finding him, particularly when he may not even be a Coastguard. I see that John was appointed from London in 1822, have you had any luck tracing the family in England? Martin |

Thank you so much for checking that out Martin. I did look in England and John Adam was born in Dublin in about 1799, he was in the Navy from age 13, aboard the Partridge with Capt. Adye chasing Napoleon. I think the Adam family were probably Dubliners, I haven't found any English links at all, but not to say William wasn't in the English Navy, I'll check it out. Thank you, Andrea |
