Is there any way off tracing my 4x Great grandad John Nicholls now that i have discovered he was pensioned out of the coast guards 8th July 1877 from Burr Point Station. Also what does 3 Badges mean in a persons record, and how do i find out what they are? R NICHOLLS

Robert I can in part answer your question. The three badges referred too are Good Conduct Badges. These were not really badges at all, but stripes of white, later red, ribbon worn on the left sleeve. For an example see the link to the photo gallery below. http://www.coastg...oto_id=364 For the seamen each badge equated to an extra penny per day in pay, so the loss of a stripe had a direct impact on a mans' pocket as well as his status.
