Coastguard....William Lewis Ost
kilmeny
Valerie Millington has asked me to post some info regarding her paternal grandfather, William Lewis Ost born in Stokes Bay, England in 1859, - the son of John Ost ( Coastguard) and so grandson of James Ost (already posted on CoY).

William Lewis Ost worked as a Coastguard from Cork, and during WW1 was a Lieut. in RN. At that time he was a' Boom Defence Officer' in Cork Harbour, and was awarded the MBE for something he did in that post. I may not have got all these details right, but that is the gist of my knowledge of him.

Does anyone know exactly what he did do that warranted this award , please?
He died in 1936 aged nearly 77, and is buried in Dorset.

Hi

I'm not sure that I can add anything more to what you already have, but William L Ost's notice of his award was pubished in the London Gazette on 4 June 1918 - Issue 30730 page 6737. This confirms that he was a Boom Officer in Queenstown, but little more than that. Unfortunately the LG online archive kept throwing me out when I tried to confirm whether the award was an MBE.

His service record is available online at the NA in ADM 188, but again frustratingly there appears to be no officers service record for him in ADM 196.

I have a little more info on Lt.William Lewis Ost.His MBE was awarded on June 13 1918 (it became part of the Military Division of the Order upon the latter's creation in 1919) The short citation reads "Boom Defence Officer, Queenstown, Co.Cork) I understand that at the time of his marriage in Queenstown in 1881 he was a signalman on HMS Orwell, but after that, the only dates I have are from when he had become a coastguard..Roches Row,Queenstown in1887; Castletown,Berehaven in 1888 & Knightstown , Valentia in 1893. I would be absolutely delighted to be able to have any details of his Navy career. ( one relative, long since deceased, believed that he was a torpedo expert!)
