Can anybody help obtain pictures of coastguard ships 'Topaz' and 'Bellisle'. They operated around the coast of Ireland in 1880s and 1890s. Rgds Jim |

Jim Can I suggest that you visit the National Maritime Museum website, link below: http://www.nmm.ac.uk/server/show/nav.2920 If you then go to the Historic Photographs Cat and enter 'Belleisle', you will find that they hold at least one photograph of the ship, which can be purchased on line. Return to the main web page and then enter the Drawings & Prints Cat, select Vessels - you want 'Topaze 1858' - you will find that they hold two prints of this ship. Incidentaly in the photographs section above they hold a close up of Topaze's figurehead, but unfortunately not the ship itself. Regards Martin |

My GG Grandfather served on both of those ships - William Wick. He served on HMS Topaz (e) 17th July 1877 to 22nd April 1878 He then had a spell on HMS Hecate(or Hecato?) 23rd April 1878 to 27August 1878 he was transferred to HMS Hecate as Petty Officer First Class until 27th August 1878 when he was transferred to HMS Belleisle HMS Bellisle 28th August 1878 to 13th September 1884 HMS Belleisle out of Baldoyle. He became Commander Bosun and on 13th September 1884 after 30 years in the service he was pensioned off. His service record also notes that he was “traced on 21st December 1882 and 22nd August 1884 and he had three GC (general commission?) Badges Dont know if your relative was in or around the same time. If so Id love to find out more if you have any details? Kind regards Kieran |
