Hi Judy and welcome to the Forum. I have traced Joseph's movements while in the CG Service. The first entry I can find for him is a posting from Westport to Atherfield on 14 February 1829. There is a Westport (Port-Na-Franc) in Ireland, but there was no sign of him there, so it is possible that this refers to the Westport, north of Edinburgh, where he may have signed up for the CG Service. This could also tie in with him marrying a girl from Scotland? For ease I will list his next movements: 21 April 1829 from Atherfield to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight 1 September 1830 to Ryde 7 June 1832 to Shanklin 12 June 1832 to Light House (Ireland) 10 October to 1835 to Roberts Cove 1 December 1853 placed on Superan List at £32 per annum. For his entire career he remained rated as a Boatman. Hope this helps in your search. Regards Martin |

Hello Judy. Joseph Ward was a member of The Preventive Water Guard in 1822. Subsequently, as many others did, he became a member of the Coastguard service. Regards Tony |

I am a bit new at this and don't know how to reply to the answers. New thing. What is The Superun List? Margaret Johnson emmigrated to Australia in April 1856, Do I assume that Joseph was dead when she left and would the Superun List have stopped paying him? His daughter Jane Ward b Roberts Cove emmigrated 1862 a while after her mother was here. I find this site extraordinary but am just working my way around it. I was in Roberts Cove in 2003 and was told that the picture you have as the Coastguard's House was not the one and that it was further up the hill on the other side of the road. A white house as I remember it. I was disappointed to find this out because my gut feeling was that Jane Ward had lived in the house you have the photo of. Thank you. Judy O'Neill |

Hi Judy 'Superan List' is short for Superannuation List, which means he was no longer on active service and receiving a pension. Whether this continued to be paid, either in full or in part, after his death I'm afraid I have no idea. Out pensions (as opposed to those 'living in' at the Greenwich Naval Hospital) were paid through the local Customs & Excise Office. I believe there are records of the returns from these offices, which means it might be possible to trace the actual date of Joseph's death, but these can only be consulted in person at the National Archives, Kew.
