Hi, My Great Grandfather John Oliver Renowden was born in Whitegate Co. Cork, in 1850 where his father John (possibly Oliver) Renowden was stationed as part of the Coastguard. Were these births registered in Ireland or UK? My Great Great Grandfather originally came from and subsequently retired in Flushing, Cornwall.

Hi Anne, welcome to the Forum and a Happy Christmas. I would say that it is almost certain that any births in Ireland would be registered there. However, if the child was baptised Tony might have access to the details. I do not know if you are aware of this, but John O Renowden served on HMS Royal George during the Crimea War, where he saw service in the Baltic. From the Ship's Description Book I have established that he entered Royal George on the 11 February 1854, and was discharged on 29 April 1856. He gave his place of birth as Falmouth and his physical description is noted as 5' 7.5'' tall, pale complexion, light hazel eyes and brown hair. On entry he gave his age as 32 and 3 months. For this service he was awarded the Baltic Medal. John Oliver Renowden (snr) entered the CG Service on the 10 June 1847, after serving in the RN, his last ship being HMS Penguin, a 6 gun Packet Brig stationed at Falmouth. His first appointment in the CG service was at Lighthouse CGS in Ireland. Regards Martin Edited by crimea1854 on 27/12/2008 09:31 |

Hi Martin, Many thanks for the prompt response! The information you supplied was terrific, and put some pieces of our family together. I will certainly contact Tony re: my Great Grandfathers Baptism in Ireland. I am especially interested in my Great Grandfather's Mother's maiden name, as the family 'legend' is that she was a Kempthorne, a name well represented in Cornwall, and I have it as a middle name. Thanks again and a Happy New Year to you! Regards, Anne |

Anne I do not know if you have already visited this CG site, but it does have details of your Gt Grandfather's mother, who, if I'm reading it correctly, was a Louisa Boas. There is also the mention of a Mary Symons? Hopefully from the information you have you can make some sense of it!! http://www.genuki...s/P-R.html Regards Martin |

Hi Martin, Thank you for the further update. I have come across Louise Boas as the wife of John O. Renowden Snr, but the first child listed with that union was born in 1854. My Great Grandfather's, wedding and death certificates both state he was born in 1850, the wedding certificate cites a Mary Kempthorne, and his death certificate cites a Mary Kempwill (which I think is spelling error). I am of the opinion that John O. snr may have married twice, and my GG was the product of that marriage/union. I have done some research on Mary Symons, and there is some sort of link to the Kempthorne name. I am hoping that Tony can find a baptismal record to clear up this mystery! Thanks again for your help! Cheers! Anne |
