According to my ancestor's RN service record, he should have completed his RN service in 1876, instead he left HMS Hector in 1877 discharged to Cowes. In 1880 he rejoined the RN to complete pensionable service, this is the wording on his record, from May 1880, no finishing date. At the moment I haven't established whether this break was in Coastguard service. The question is, IF this was coastguard service, would this CG service have counted toward his RN pensionable service. Unfortunately it looks as if he was invalided out in 1882, which certainly wasn't the end of any normal engagement LAWRANCE
