I am trying to trace my GGG Grandfather John McCready who was listed as an exciseman (deceased) when his daughter Eliza McCready was sent to Australia from Downpatrick as an Irish Famine Orphan in 1849. His wife's name was Elizabeth and was also deceased at that time. Can anyone help please? |

Hello Valerie and welcome to the Forum. I'm not sure that you are in the right place, because I believe 'Excise Men' were completely different from 'Coastguards'. Nevertheless, I did check the Index of Nominations, and the early Establishment Books for Ireland but found no John McCready of Cready. Can I suggest that you follow the link below, which will take you to the National Archives online guide to researching Customs men, this may provide some clue as to where you need to search for information. http://www.nation...fletID=234 Sorry I cannot be of more help. Regards Martin |
