Gina Out of interest I downloaded what I thought was his Service Record, and this does show that he was at Baldoyle between at least 26 August 1892 and 15 November 1899. I also consulted ADM 175/82A, which are the CG Record Cards (A-C) that cover the period 1900-1923, unfortunately he was not there. This is a shame because they are a goldmine of family information, giving wife's name and dates of birth for children - although not their names. Consulting the other documents available in the ADM 175 series, he seems to have served when there appears to be a gap in the records! However, I did note from his service record that time was added because of prior merchant navy service. In your place I think I would follow this avenue of enquiry to research his early career.
