Charles Ibbotson Cooper (Coastguard/Customs Officer)
I am trying to obtain more information on the service records Charles Ibbotson Cooper who was shown in the censuses detailed below
1838 Coastguard (location unknown)
1841 Coastguard living at Martello Tower 26 in Dymchurch in Kent
1851 Chief Boatman at Broomhill, Kent
1861 to 1891 Described variously as a retired Customs officer/Coastguard pensioner living at Littlehampton
Charles is listed in the GENUKI.ORG.UK website in the Coastguard section

If anyone has any records mentioning Charles, or knows how I can get hold of them, then I would be very happy to hear from them.

Thanks

Hi David

I believe I have managed to trace Charles Cooper's entire career.

He appears to have been nominated on 25 June 1821 at Arundel, taking up his first posting at Osmington Mills (Weymouth) on 27 August 1821.

On the 14 July 1825 he was transferred to Wicklow Head in Ireland, and from there, on the 31 August 1828, to Wexford, and thence, on the 15 June 1829 to Cahore.

From Cahore he was transferred back to England and Tower 24 on 22 April 1831, but this time on a promotion to Commissioned Boatman.

Some eleven years later he was transferred to Jurys Gap (Rye), again on a promotion, but this time to Chief Boatman in Charge. This was to be his last posting bringing a career in the CG Service to an end after some 31 years, being Discharged on the 21st September 1852 on an Allowance of £49 per Annum.
