I am trying to trace any information re my husband's family. His 2xgreat grandfather was John Keleher (various spellings abound - Kelleher, Kelleker etc etc) - born c 1840, Whitegate, Co Cork, S Ireland, and married to a Margaret Cosgrove c 1865. Two sons, Francis and Thomas were born 1868 and 1870 in Whitegate, and then it would appear the family moved to Kent, England, with three more sons being born - William Michael 1871, Daniel James 1873 and Charles 1876. In the 1871 census John is listed as a coastguard at Lydd, Kent along with his wife and family. In 1881 he is listed at Hougham, Dover, Kent, again as a coastguard. Family legend has it that John was originally a coastguard at Whitegate, Co Cork, before his move to England, but I have not been able to find anything to prove or disprove this. If anyone has any information, or can point me in the right direction to find it myself, I would be eternally grateful! I am able to visit the National Archives at Kew as my daughter lives local to it, but as yet have not plucked up the courage to do so - again any tips would be gratefully received. Thanks to anyway who takes time to read this and reply. |

Hi and welcome to the Forum. The good news is that you can do most of your research from the comfort of your own home. The NA currently has the Coastguard records in the ADM 175 series available as FREE downloads. What you have to do is select the CG district and the year range that you’re interested in and then search for your man. Based on the information you provided I downloaded ADM175/68, which covers the ‘Newhaven District’. Luckily John Kelleher, Commissioned Boatman, was found early in the document at Townsend, Folkestone. What this provided was details of his previous posting and the date that he transferred to Townsend. In his particular case it was from the ‘Grand Redoubt’ on 23 April 1875. In addition this also provided his Official Number - 78649; confirmed his date of birth as 13 September 1840 and that he had initially signed up for 10 years on 12 September 1868, and had been awarded 3 Good Conduct Badges. It is then necessary to repeat the procedure looking up ‘Grand Redoubt’ for the period that covers 1875, gradually tracing back his movements, hopefully to Ireland! Unfortunately you have to know into which CG district the ‘Grand Redoubt’ falls, since unlike Ireland, no one to my knowledge has indexed the ADM 175 series for England. This may mean you downloading & searching quite a few documents, although I did discover that at the very end of one document there was an alphabetical index of CG Men, but whether this applies to every document I have no idea. The other piece of good news is that John Kelleher’s service record can be downloaded from the NA for a fee of £3.50 (link below). This document is in the ADM 188 series, which covers his service FROM 1873. If he did sign up for Continuous Service (CS) in 1868 then he could also have a CS Number so his service before 1873 can be looked up in the ADM 139 series of records. However, I have found that for CG Men in ADM 139 this tends to just record that the man was in the CG service, and provides little or no details of the CG stations he served at, but it could provide details of any RN ships served on prior to joining the CG Service. http://www.nation...ultcount=1 I hope this has been of some help, and all the best of luck in your search. Regards Martin |

Hi Martin Thank you so much for taking the time to give me such a full and informative reply! I have downloaded his service record - I'll let you know how I get on with finding out anything more. Thanks again, your time and knowledge is much appreciated - whilst I have been researching my family history for some time, I am new to Coastguard Records etc and it's all a bit of a mystery to me.... Best wishes, Liz |
