Able Seaman William Lawrance (Alias Lawrence). RN service record shows him joining HMS Hector 14/12/1876 He is then shown as Shore Cowes on 5/2/1877 He joins HMS Wellington 31/5/1880, and then signs on to complete pensionable service, which he appears to fail to do so as he disappears into RNH Haslar in 1882. As Hector was on Coastguard service in 1877, I presume that there is a strong possibility this gap was on coastguard service. How can I prove this ? If this was the case, where did he serve ? I read the NA sheets on Coastguard service, and they seem to suggest a gap covering this period. Any help much appreciated. Lawrance LAWRANCE

Hi Lawrance, and welcome to the Forum. This is a little outside my own period of interest, so I'm on unfamiliar ground here. However, having looked at the NA Catalogue I think I would look at Hector's Ship's Record Book in ADM 175/67 (the 175 indicates that she was a CG Ship), which covers the period 1868-1878, to see if your man was onboard; if he was discharged during this period it might provide a clue as to where. Similarly I would look at ADM 117/454 to 457, which are Hector's Ships Ledgers for 1876-1877. Unfortunately the majority of this series of documents, covering the period 1878-1909, were destroyed by fire in 1941. Sorry I can't be of more help. Thanks for that info. Will have to see if the exchequer will stretch to a day trip to Kew. He was certainly on hector as his records show that was the case. If his record on Hector shows his destination on leaving, then I may be in luck. This man is an enigma in many ways, and I would be happier if I was 100% certain he was my Great grandfather, just in case it is all wasted effort. Lawrance LAWRANCE

Lawrance One way to keep the cost down, particularly if you are not sure that this is your man, is to ask the NA to copy the relevant page of the document and send it to you. If you go online to the NA website there is a drop-down menu from the 'Shop online' box on the heading, from here you can order an estimate for the cost of them copying the relevant section/s. You already have his record, so this should provide his Ships Number while on Hector and will avoid them copying the whole document. Just specify as much information as you can, and be sure to ask for paper copies (this is the cheapest option @ 45p/copy + £1.70 P&P). Regards Martin |

Thanks again Martin. Thanks to your earlier posting, I have already requested an estimate from NA for copying of relevant documents. If coach trip from Somerset and photocopying is cheaper than their estimate, then I shall have a day out in Kew Lawrance LAWRANCE

Having now had an estimate back from NA, I will have to go up to Kew, and photocopy only what I need. I think it will have to be when I come out of hibernation. Also will try to copy the muster of the Duke of Wellington for 1880 which is when he returned to RN service, this should give where he came from Lawrance LAWRANCE
