Has anyone come across a Costal Guard of the above name around Ireland. It is believed he started in the service in County Clare around late 1820's early 1830's. He eloped with my Gt Gt Grandmother Elizabeth Wilson from Cape Clear Island 1830's - early 1840's so could have been stationed at Baltimore or Stations in that area in County Cork. Then alot of their children were born in Belfast (not sure of any stations around there) and they possibly ended up around Howth near Dublin although it is thought at some stage he changed to working as a lighthouse keeper. Any information would be much appriciated! Don |

Hi Don and welcome to the Forum I could find only one James Butler in the Irish ADM 175 series of records, and while I have tracked his movements from 1822, I’m afraid my Irish geography is too weak to know if his movements’ accord with information you have. Listed below is what I found, I would suggest you see how these compare with what you have to date to see if these match any known facts. 12 June 1822 Ballintoy GCS removed to Melroy CGS 28 June 1822 Removed from Melroy 27 November 1822 to Port Terlin Removed from Port Terlin 6 May 1825 to Ballycastle CGS Removed 31 August 1826 to Port Kinnagoe Removed 1 May 1829 to Port Redford Removed 2 March 1842 to Point of Garron Discharged 17 March 1846 – Superannuated. Throughout his career he remained rated as a Boatman. Regards Martin Edited by crimea1854 on 05/11/2008 07:57 |
