I am a new member & browsing this excellent site, looked at the Kerry Stations list. At Laic on the north shore of Castlemaine Harbour, just east of Inch beach, which is opposite Cromane point & C.G.Station on the south shore, are some ruins, gable ends etc. which I understood to be the Lack coast guard station. It does not seem to be listed, but would come between Cromane & Minard if it were. Anyone visiting it would need to talk with the adjacent farmer for easy access by land. John Hill. |

Hello John As far as I am aware there is no complete list of Coastguard sites in Ireland. Some stations came and went, locations were changed , others were destroyed. At one time there were, I believe 220 stations in Ireland and 500 in the U.K. You are quite right in saying that local information is the only way to find these locations. However, luck, is also needed as very few people know of these stations which started up in the 1820's in the South of Ireland and then rapidly spread to all coasts. Any news about early stations is welcome at this site. Tony |
