William is my Great Grandfather, born 1857 Lifton Devon, married Mary Jane Brock 1855/6 Week St Mary Cornwall. I have him as Cost Guard Boatman (RN) Blundell Sands 1891, and then 1901 Ballymoney County Wexford and then 1 Marine Terrace (coast guard cottages, Greystones, County Wicklow, not sure of the date. He is buried at Redford Cemetery Greystones and with Mary Jane. Does anyone have any other information about him, I also believe him to have been in the RN, no dates. |

Sue welcome to the forum. If you follow the link below it will take you to the National Archives online database of Seamans service for William, which can be downloaded for the princely sum of £3.50. Hello Sue, A number of beautifully photographed books by Derek Paine about Greystones, Co.Wicklow were published in the last few years and contain a lot of information concerning Coastguard families in that area. One of these volumes has a photograph of "Coastguard William J.Jago, stationed in Greystones about 1902. Mr. Jago is the grandfather of Beatrice, Sybil and Billy Thompson of Malvern, La Touche Place" Maybe you are aware of this photo. The Coastguard service was part of the Royal Navy at that time. Thank you so much for the information I did find William and his service record along with the names of the ships he served on. There is an entry which states Traced Medal with the date of 6/2/02, can any one tell me what this could be please? |

Sue The 'Traced medal' note refers to the date of the award of a Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct medal. To know if he was entitled to any other medals I would need to know what ships, and the dates of his service on those ships, to check for entitlement. Regards Martin |
