On the 1911 census, my coastguard great-grandfather, Bartholomew Crone, was stationed at Ballyglass, Co Mayo with his family. I've checked on a map and this is appears to be an inland area of Co Mayo. Can anyone tell me why a coastguard station would be located there and also whether it still exists. Thanks for any help. Clare, Ballyglass harbour is just north of Belmullet town on the Erris peninsula. There is a present day Irish Coast Guard unit based there as well as an RNLI lifeboat station. The CG unit based there is using the old HM Coastguard rocket house which has been there since before the founding of the state. Here is a link to a couple of pictures of the present set up. Colin |
