Hi I am researching a Cornelius Murphy who served as a Coastguard in Inishbofin Station in Donegal. Cornelius married in 1864 in Gortahork Chapel, Donegal . The Inishbofin Station was in what is now Falcarragh but was known as Crossroads back then. The station is now gone, replaced with a school. Cornelius originally came from Cork, and i think he was stationed here first before perhaps being moved to Donegal or moved himself. I think that this is him ADM 188/63/75264 Description: Name Murphy, Cornelius Official Number: 75264 Place of Birth: Cork, Cork Date of Birth: 29 August 1836 Any help appreciated. Regards |

Welcome to the Forum. I found some information in the CG Records but this was a little contradictory, however, I believe it is the same man, although there was another CG named Cornelius Murphy serving in Ireland, but he was born in 1813. According to ADM 175/20 pdf 283, your Cornelius was nominated to the CG Service in Aug 1864 from HMS Bacchante with a first posting to Inishbofin. ADM 175/40 pdf 81 has him at Inishbofin, but his last ship is shown as Hawke, and his date of birth as 27 July 1832, born Ringas Riddy(?) [Ringaskiddy sic], Cork. However, it also shows his Continuous Service number as 12305A, and when you go online to the NA this record has his date of birth as 29 August 1836, tying in with the later record you quote. http://discovery....i=D7900856 This record may show him serving on HMS Ajax in 1854, because there were two men of his name on her in the Baltic during the Crimean War, and he might be one of them. The 1813 Cornelius was on HMS Caesar. Hope this all makes sense. Martin Edited by crimea1854 on 06/05/2014 08:01 |

Many thanks for that. That makes sense, as he married in October of 1864 in Donegal. HMS Ajax was stationed in Cork before going to the Baltic and returning afterwards. He had a daughter who was born in county Clare, is it possible he served time in a station there before moving back to Donegal. Would there be a complete service record available anywhere or would it be from various sources? Also want to try and hunt down some pictures. Edited by malcolmph on 06/05/2014 08:45 |

If you're satisfied that this is the right man, and I would be, you should purchase the two service records as they will provide most of the information regarding his Navy and CG career. However, the earlier service records sometimes only note CG service, not the stations served at, in which case you could continue to follow his CG career in the ADM 175 series of documents (Ships Books) available as free downloads from the NA. I suspect that the page you need help with is pdf 7, which sets out his full service history; the following is my guess as to your questions. LSeaman - Leading Seaman 2Capt Top - 2nd Captain of the Top, a junior petty officer AB - Able Seaman 2 Capt M Top - 2nd Captain of Main Top, a junior petty officer under the Captain of the Main Top overseeing the topmen, the ships elite, setting the sails. There is a note on the left hand side which starts TM, this indicates that he had passed as a Trained Man, and was paid an extra penny per day, his record indicates that this was in 1860. Under this note are the dates of the award/loss of his good conduct badges, only 3 were ever awarded:- 1st GCB awarded Dec 1860 Deprived 1 GCB 8 Aug 1862 (if you look at the ships record for Bacchante for this date you will see that he was demoted to an AB, so he must have blotted his copy book) GCB reinstated 8 Aug 1863. Out of sequence note of the award of 2nd GCB 1862 3rd CGB 1 March 1864 We also now know that he served on Ajax in the Crimean War and was awarded the Baltic Medal. The remainder seems fairly straight forward, but that might be because I'm used to reading these documents. However, if there is a note you don't understand let me know. Martin |

Wow wow wow - truly unbelievable to have this in my family tree. Kinda explains my long interest in both nautical fiction and non-fiction particular from this and earlier time periods. Many thanks for your help ![]() Merged on 09/05/2014 20:23:38: Can I just ask if you know the ships names I can make out the Ajax first and the bacchante before going into the coastguard but the middle part is hard to read.
