Coastguards at Ballycastle? Dunfeeney?
johnhuk
Hello all,

I too am researching my family history. All of my family so far seem to originate from Plymouth, Devon except my great-grandfather.

Hi Royal Navy record states that he was born in Dunfeeney, Ballycastle, County Mayo. His marriage certificate says that his father was a coastguard man. When I got his fathers service record it says that his father spent most of his service as a coastguard at Ballycastle, which would explain why my great-grandfather was born over there....but I'm having trouble finding any information with regard to a coastguard station at Ballycastle...anything would be good!

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks...

John

Hello John,

Hello Tony

His surname was Williams.

I've just noticed that there are two Ballycastles, one in Co Antrim and the other in Co Mayo...I'm investigating the Co Mayo one..don't know if the other had a Coastguard station or not...

Thanks for your help!

John,

Although there are coastguard books for Ballycastle, Co Antrim the Mayo Ballycastle may have been an alternative name for the Sligo Station according to the index of stations on in the ADM project Article: http://www.coastguardsofyesteryear.org/viewpage.php?page_id=18.

John,
There is a Station at Ballycastle, Co.Mayo (now a hotel), also one at Ballycastle, Co.Antrim, let as apartments. Would you have a Christian name for "Williams" coastguard and maybe name of wife as I do have some note on a number of "Williams" serving in Ireland.

Tony,

My Great-Great Grandfather was John Thomas Williams (born Devon 1847). His wife was Caroline Williams (formerly Lidstone, born Cownwall 1850) their Children were George Henry Williams (born 1877 Dunfeeney, Co Mayo according to RN service record) and Elizabeth Williams, place and date of birth unknown.

Hope that helps!

The 1901 Census return for Minard Coastguard station 27/19. shows:-

John Thomas Williams. Coastguard Ch.of Eng. 53. Married Born England.
Caroline M.Williams. Wife. C.of E. 49. Married. b. England.
Edward P.Williams. Son. C.of E. 14. Scholar. b.Galway.
Henry Williams. Son. C.of E. 11. scholar. b. Kerry.
Reference; National Archives,Bishop St. Dublin.

Church of Ireland Baptismal records.
John Williams of John Thomas and Caroline Mary. Baptised 31 January 1884. Born 1884. Coastguard at Achilbeg Station. Parish Achill. County Mayo.
Alfred Thomas Williams of John Thomas and Caroline Mary. Bapt. 15 July 1885. Coastguard Achilbeg Station. Achill Parish. Co.Mayo.

Many Church of Ireland records were lost by fire in 1922 so ther is no complete run of records, there are many gaps, some parishes have lost their entire records.
We do not have 10 yearly Census records from 1841 onwards only 1901 and 1911.

John,
The Census records are held at the National Archives in Dublin. Until a few years ago it was possible to examine bound volumes of the original returns filled out by the house occupant concerned. However they can now be printed out from micro-film reels only.
It is not possible to get copies of the Church records.

Thanks Tony,

Just to confirm that everything you have told me matches exactly with my great-great grandfathers service record for dates and stations..

This site has been a great help!

All I need to do now is track down some photos....like that will be easy if not impossible...
