Coastguard Station Dalkey - Thomas Hobbs
mrshumph
I hope someone can help me. I am trying to track down my great great grandfather Thomas Hobbs who, in 1890 was H M Boatsman at the coastguard station in Dalkey. His son, Frederick Hobbs was born there too. I think Thomas was born in England. That's really all of the information I have.

Hope someone can help!

Hi, and welcome to the Forum Ciara.

For the period you are interested in the only information available is via a mans service record, but unless you can get to the National Archives and check all the likely records for free, it becomes a very expensive exercise with so little information to go on.

But now for the good news! I searched the 1901 Irish census and found Thomas and family living at Wentworth Place, South Dublin, now working as a Bank Porter. On this it only had his place of birth as England, age 42. Checking the 1911 Census he was a Bank Messenger, with his place of birth given as 'Liver low, Down, Angling' age 53, which made no sense at all.

Searching all the service records on the NA website I found a Thomas Hobbs, Tiverton, Devon, born 14 August 1858, so taking a bit of a punt, on the assumption that 'Liver low' was a transcription error for Tiverton, and similarly 'Down' was Devon, I ordered the record. This showed service in Dalkey as a Coastguard, confirming I had the right man.

To save you also buying this record, drop me a PM with your private email address and I will send it to you.

As an added bit of information, what is not shown on his record is that while serving on HMS Thalia, he was awarded the Egypt Medal (dated 1882) and Khedive's Star.

Just out of interest, do you have a date of birth for Joseph?

Do you mean Thomas? Or Frederick?
Fred was born on 18 Aug 1890 to Thomas Hobbs and Catherine Weeks. Thomas and Kate were married in 1877 in Dalkey in Ireland and thats were Fred was born. They also had William, Albert and Joseph William. Fred married a woman names Teresa Talbot and had some children. His youngest son Joseph, born 3 March 1929 was my grandfather.

No, it was Frederick's brother Joseph, born around 1894 in Waterford who appears on the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census that I meant.

I also find the Weeks name interesting, because there were a number of Weeks' serving in the Coastguard Service, all be it in the 1850's.

Oh right, sorry! Yes Joseph William Hobbs born Jul 14 1895. He was on leave on 8 MAR 1942 and was on his way home. He had a heart attack on the train and they found him dead when the train pulled into the station.

I have ordered a copy of Thomas' marriage cert in the hopes of finding Kate's parents.

I'm almost 99.9% certain that Joseph Hobbs CR10 (Merchant Seamen's Ticket) is available on Find my Past. On the ticket his date of birth is given as 14 July 1894, Waterford, it also shows that he was a member of the Royal Naval Reserve, but more importantly includes an identity photograph.

I've checked and there is a RNR service record for him, but the NA catalogue shows a date of birth of the 24 July 1894.

The medal roll for WW1 indicates that he was awarded the British War and Victory Medals together with the 1914-15 Star.

Does anyone know if Joseph Hobbs had a brother William Hobbs born c.1842 and died as chief officer, coastguard in Inverness following the Kessock Ferry disaster?

William was married to a Mary Jane and had 8 children. William and Mary were born in England but his children were born in Scotland starting in North Queensferry, Forfarshire & Thurso.

I am a coastguard rescue officer in Inverness and looking at the history of the team. Any help is appreciated to trace living relatives.
