Cornelius William Flynn
quincy
I am trying to track down info on my Great Great Grandfather. He was a coastguard in Britain and Ireland. From the Census and births he was in the following places
1858-60 Dover - Ramsgate
1861 Grain Kent
1862-65 Wexford -Gorey area?
1868 Pembroke
1870-2 Aberporth Carmarthen

He was born in Queenstown Cork about 1827 and married Ellen HEALEY before 1858
I think Ellen died in London in 1888 as a widow?

He seems to have disappeared from the records after 1872

Is he on anyones databases or can you point me in the right direction
Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.

Cornelius was nominated to the CG service in May 1856 from HMS Russell with a first posting to Cornhill. Subsequently he made the following moves:

8 Nov 1858 to Ramsgate (175/7-100)
26 June 1860 to Cockleshell Hard (175/7-44)
25 June 1861 to Morriscastle, Wexford (175/19-49)

It should be possible to keep tracking his movements using the Ships Books in ADM 175, but I've been unable to find him - he should be in the Kingsdown District of Ireland.

If you are confident about his date of birth you might find his service record on the National Archives (NA) website, this will cost £3.36 to download. Alternatively if you could get to the NA you can consult HMS Russell's Description Book (ADM 38/8925), which will list all his previous ships.

Martin. Thanks for your reply. As suggested I ordered the apparently closest service record on thr NA website but it was the wrong one.
I'll take trip to Kew when the weather warms up, to check on the HMS Russell records and find his service record.
Any other thoughts on finding his later movements, pension, death etc.

Hi

I had another go at finding Cornelius, but this time working back from his posting in Wales, and have now pieced together his remaining service:

28 Oct 1866 to Ballinskelligo - for misconduct (ADM 175/70 pdfs 35 & 196)
4 April 1867 to Pembroke Dock (175/63 - 9)
14 Feb 1869 to St Dagmeals (175/63 - 31)
10 July 1872 discharged to pension (175/58 - 24)

Hi,
I understand that this may be a very LONG shot, however I am after some information of Cornelius William Flynn. I am pretty certain that the above mentioned man is the same one I am researching for my family tree. Would you happen to know any further information on him or is the above information all you have?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks & kindest regards,
Olivia Mynard

Since 2013 more records are now available online, one of which is Cornelius' service record. The following is a list of those ships he served on and the dates of service:

Modeste: 8 July 1845 - 2 Oct 47 - Ord Seaman
Carysfort: 3 Oct 47 - 25 March 48 - OS
Dragon: 3 May 48 - 8 June 50 - Able Seaman
Ajax: 25 June 50 - 14 May 52 - AB
Rodney: 15 May 52 - 30 January 56 - AB
Russell: 31 January 56 - 15 May 56 - AB

His service on HMS Rodney saw him in the Crimea, for which he was awarded the Crimea medal with Sebastopol clasp and the Turkish Crimea Medal. The medal roll actually has him as William Flynn, but his ships number is the same as that on his service record (524) so I'm confident it's the same man.

The age given on entry to HMS Modeste was 20, which puts his birth perhaps earlier than was originally thought, although ages are notoriously inaccurate!

Hi Olivia,
There are a few of us on "Ancestry" with an interest in Cornelius and can confirm all that crimea1854 has stated above.
We have not yet tracked down his exact birth or death but have quite a bit. Where do you fit into the Flynn family tree. Please email me on mdaly8342@yahoo.co.uk
