Hugh Sicely (Sisley)
sisley
According to the 1841 Census, Hugh SICELY was born in St. Ives circa 1799. There were probably two other HUGHs born in St. Ives between 1797 and 1799 (surname SISLEY).

HUGH married MARY FREEMAN also of St. Ives date unknown. I am in the process of buying a CD of St. Ives Marriages to ascertain the date of their marriage.

It would appear that HUGH and MARY had two children born close to Brighton, Sussex. MARY FREEMAN SICILEY (born 05.12.1833) and JOHN RICHARD SICELY (born 01.02.1837). JOHN also served in the Coastguard Service in Essex and Norfolk.

Other children of the marriage were WILLIAM (c1827) place of birth unknown, MARY CATHERINE (c1829) in Newcastle, Ireland and EDWARD (c1831) in Starcross, Devon.

In the 1841 Census HUGH is living with MARY in Burnham, Essex his occupation being shown as "Navy"

From 1851 onwards each Census shows him working for the Coastguard Service working in Burnham. He probably died between 1871 and 1881.

I have come across a JAMES FREEMAN SICELY who was born in Castlebellingham, Louth, Ireland in i1823 who later married Harriet Rand in Maldon, Essex in 1859.

He was also in the Coastguard Service mainly in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. He died in 1892.

I am trying to establish if that JAMES was the son of HUGH.

Are there any records which show HUGH served in Louth in about 1823, in Devon in about 1831 and in Sussex (1833 -37) before moving to Burnham?

I would be very grateful for any information.

Welcome to the forum John.

Can I suggest that you follow the link below where there are four Coastguard 'Sicely's' mentioned, one of whom is definately your man. From the dates you may be able to establish some family ties.

Martin,

Very many thanks for your reply and welcome.

I had already come across this website and had gleaned much information from it but I still have various matters to resolve.

I am trying to gather information prior to 1841.

The various spellings of Sisley / Sicely does not help. In the 1851 Census for instance Hugh was entered as "Tisley"

Regards,
John

Hi John

I guessed that you might have already have seen the web site in my link.

To establish if Hugh is James’s father, I would assume that you have obtained a copy of James marriage certificate, because this should have both the bride and grooms fathers’ details?

On Hugh’s movements prior to 1841, the only thing I can suggest is that you go to the National Archives at Kew, and consult the service records in ADM 139. Unfortunately, your success in this is going to depend very much on whether Hugh signed up under the ‘Continuous Engagement’ system introduced in 1853.

If you were able to establish if Hugh served on a particular ship at some point in his career, consulting the ships Description Book would provide details of previous service and may give a clue as to subsequent service. The other piece of information this would provide, in addition to his physical description, would be a ‘usual place of residence’ when not at sea.

Today I received a copy of the Marriage Certificate for JAMES FREEMAM SICELY.

He is shown as a Widower aged 35 years. He married HARRIETT RAND on 11th November 1859 in the Register Office, Maldon. His occupation was Coast Guard and he was living in Steeple, Essex.

His father is shown as HUGH SICELY. It would appear that HUGH, who was born in St. Ives, Cornwall was certainly connected with Ireland in his earlier years in the coast guard service.

I visited The National Archives yesterday.

HUGH SILSEY was stationed at Dunany Point, Co. Louth as a boatman from 11.01.1821 until 15.07.1823 when his was moved to Newcastle, Co. Down.

HUGH SILSEY is almost certainly HUGH SICELY. The records I have for SICELY's children match the dates and places of service of SILSEY.
