ROBERTS - William Lamble (Lambell) 1809-1881
thornel
hi everybody, I am looking for people that I can share information with who may be related to coastguard William Lamble (LAMBELL) ROBERTS. 1809 – 1881. Or know of any information of him.

He and his wife, Jane Goodman, were born in Devonshire. They had 12 children. I am related to his daughter Ellen (Elenor/Ellenor/Ellanor etc) who married Thomas WALLACE in Portaferry 1861.

He was a Chief Boatman and was stationed at Achill Island, Bullsmouth, Holywood and Tara stations. In later years he was Harbour Master at Bangor, He is buried at Holywood, Co.Down.

I have been unable to find his service record. (Maybe I am looking in the wrong place in the National Archives! - it is quite an awesome site)

I have submitted a portrait painting in this website that was made between 1850 and 1860, possibly in Belfast. I have had no luck in trying to trace other similar images (esp colour!) I hope that somebody may know where i can look.

Thanks,
Laramay Thorne

Hi

I've had a look at the National Archives website, and he does not appear to have a service record. However, it should be possible to reconstruct this from the ADM 175 files available as free downloads on the NA website.

Using the information you supplied I was able to trace his service back to 1844, but he is shown as having been transfered from 'Duhooma' to Ballycastle (ADM 175/19 pdf 352), the problem is that I cannot find a CG Station of this name, or anything similar, and a Google search produces nothing! I'm therefore open to suggestions as to where this is.

So from 13 Jan 1844 we know he was at Ballycastle, he then made the following moves:
3 Feb 1855 to Hollywood
15 Jan 1859 to Port Ballentoy
12 May 1859 to Tara
20 Dec 1861 to Cultra (ADM 175/19 pdf 386)
30 June 1869 - Pensioned (ADM 175/41 pdf 55)

I also found him on ADM 175/39 pdf 107, this particular record gives his place of birth as St Germain, Cornwall, 9 July 1809.

There is also a possibility that he served in the Navy during the Crimean War on board HMS Caesar (Ships No. 269), but this requires further research, because the information I have on this man is not conclusive.

Duhooma is Dohooma/Doohooma in Mayo across the bay from Blacksod.

See http://www.coastg...s.php#mayo for the location,

With bpa's help I have now found William, but there still appears to be a gap that I cannot fill. He is shown to have been moved from Ballycroy to Duhooma on 13 Aug 1836, but at this time he is only rated as a Boatman, so he must have been promoted to Commissioned Boatman, then Chief Boatman between 1836 and 1844.

He was nominated to Ballycroy from HMS San Josef on 10 Sept 1833 (ADM 175/16 pdf 299). Although the Establishment Book does not mention San Josef, the index of nominations does. Also ADM 175/78 pdf 40-41 Nom. No.4321 confirms his place of birth as St Germain. and gives Looe as his wifes.

Hope this is of some help.

Also... would you be able to tell me what uniform he is wearing? This is another bit I have not been able to find because other people seem to have more regalia, like a sash, or sword. http://www.coastguardsofyesteryear.org/photogallery.php?photo_id=188. Thanks

Hi Laramay

William Roberts was my great great great grandfather. My great great grandfather George Stewart married William's daughter Harriette Roberts and they lived in Holywood County Down. They had nine children that I know of, my great grandfather Joseph Marshall Stewart being the second youngest. Sadly Harriette died quite young and George later remarried, but many of the Stewart family kept the Roberts name alive as a middle name.

Since my original posts I now have access to the Merchant Seamen's Tickets, one of which was issued to William when Chief Boatman at Ballycastle on 19 July 1845 (139,845). On this he is described as 5' 8'' tall, light hair, fair complexion and grey eyes, first went to sea as a boy in 1824 and had served 10 years in the Royal Navy; when unemployed resides at Torpoint.

Hi

Your PM prompted me to check the pension/service records now available on Ancestry where I found William. On this he is shown as first serving on HMS Dartmouth as a Boy 1st Class from 10 June 1824 to 4 Dec 1826, then HMS Thetis from 10 Dec 1826 to 21 Mar 1831 where he was rated an Ordinary Seamen.

On 4 June 1832 he served on HMS San Josef as an AB, finally being discharged to the CG Service on 26 Aug 1833.

Re his promotion to Commissioned Boatman, this occured on 24 June 1840.

Regards Martin
