My Great grand father served as a Coastguard at Co Mayo,Tyrella and Belleisle? but I haven,t been able to find him .in the data base. Why would this be? Two of his children were born when he was stationed in Mayo so I know this was around 1850-1860.

Hi Sylvia, and welcome to the Forum.

Currently not every CG is listed in the database. It is hoped that as members do their research they will update the information, so it can become available to others with family ties who follow later.

On Charles he first entered the CG Service on 3 June 1856 with a posting to Innislyre (ADM 175/19 pdf 238). He was nominated from HMS Duke of Wellington on her return from the Baltic at the end of the Crimean War. From the Baltic Medal roll he is shown as a 'Seamen Rigger', which suggests to me that at the start of the war he was working in a naval dockyard.

Using the ADM 175 records, available online free, it is possible to reconstruct his CG service. If you have a problem let me know and I will look at it for you.

If your man was born on 5 March 1827 in Stoke Demerel, Devon, then there is a service record available on the National Archives website (ADM 188/67), this will cover his service FROM 1873 to his retirement in 1877. There is also a pension application for him in ADM 29/51/48, unfortunately this takes about 3 weeks to come through if ordered online.

I suspect that your man had an interesting career, possibly serving on HMS Phoenix in the Arctic, and HMS Calliope during the 1846-47 New Zealand War, earning medals for each; these will be confirmed on the pension application.

Hope this is of some help.

Martin

PS I thought I recognised the name. A fellow medal collector has his group (photo attached) in his collection and has done a considerable amount of research on the family, just to whet your appetite one of his son's Henry lost his life on the Titanic!

Hi Sylvia,

I too am a great granddaughter of Charles Creese. My grandfather was John Charles Pomeroy Creese, the eldest son of Charles and Jane Creese. Where do you fit in?

My grandfather emmigrated to Australia and married an English lass out here on 29 April 1885, at Summerhill.

They had two sons and three daughters, two of whom were my aunts, two uncles and my Mum, the youngest of the five.

The information posted by Martin on 03/03/12, fits with the family information I have.

I have Charles Creese's New Zealand Rebellion Medal (no ribbons), as well as his gold watch and chain.

If you would like to contact me outside the forum, my e-mail address is available through my profile, as I would like to fill in the family tree.

Cynthia
