Charles Mills
Steve Dickson
I am tracing my family's genealogy and have come across some information that my great (x4) grandfather may have been a "chief boatman" (I don't know if such a thing existed) in the Coastguard.

His name was Charles Mills bn c.1796 in Cornwall.

The information seems to lead to the fact that he was a chief boatman in Clifden Co. Galway around 1847 but there are references to him being in Errislannan, which, if I am not mistaken, is the peninsula just west of Clifden.

He was married to an Ann Liaty in Maker, Cornwall in 1821 where he was listed as a "mariner".

I suspect if he was in HM Coastguard he was for some time as he stayed in this area until he passed away in Errislannan in 1870.

I would be really grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction of how to try and confirm any of the above and to try and get more information.

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the Forum Steve.

To trace the career of your man you need to refer to the CG Establishment Books in the ADM 175 series on the National Archives website. These can be downloaded for free, but be warned they are extremely large files!!

Based on the information you provided I found Charles at Mannin Bay/Bayleek, Galway, in ADM 175/19 pdf 224. This shows that he was sent there from Ballycastle on 19 July 1834, and was subsequently posted to Claggin on 18 May 1849.

To check which book you then need to consult look in the 'Articles' section of this site, then 'ADM Project' and 'Index'.

Working from station to station it is then possible to trace all his moves and career. If you find this all rather daunting I have these files saved on my computer, and would be happy to do it for you.

Re the ranks. Every man started as a Boatman, and could then be promoted to Commissioned Boatman, Chief Boatman then Chief Boatman in Charge.

Hi Martin,

Wow!!!! What you have done is amazing.

I am going to give it a go myself and have already started downloading from the National Archives. Your offer to do it for me is much appreciated although I would like to give it a try myself. If I don't try I won't learn!!!!! I am not saying I won't need to come back to you though. Wink

Again thanks for your help and I will let you know how I get on.

Hi Martin,

Okay I'm back having managed to get myself totally confused. Sorry.

I got the ADM 175/19 pdf224 where I can see him at Mannin Bay/Bayleek, Galway. From this I can see:

Reference: R9122
Date of Appointment: 19 July 1934
From Whence Nominated: Ballycastle
Name: Charles Mills
Quality: Chief Boatman
D. D.D. Removed or Absconded: Can't decipher
Date of Discharge or Removal: 18 May 1849
Station Removed To: Claggin

I then went to ADM 175/19 pdf226 where he is at Claggin. From this is see:

Reference: R6512
Date of Appointment: 18 May 1849
From Whence Nominated: Mannin Bay
Name: Charles Mills
Quality: Chief Boatman
D. D.D. Removed or Absconded: Can't decipher
Date of Discharge or Removal: 9 August 1849
Station Removed To: On an allowance of £36 per annum

I assumed this was him retiring on 9 August 1849

I then went to try and trace it back from Mannin Bay and find an entry from Ballycastle. The index on ADM 175/19 shows there are two Ballycastle's but I found him in the one at 183 in pdf271. This one shows me:

Reference: R1695
Date of Appointment: 1 Aug 1844
From Whence Nominated: Can't read but appears to start with "Kil"
Name: Charles Mills
Quality: Chief Boatman
D. D.D. Removed or Absconded: Can't decipher
Date of Discharge or Removal: 24 Nov 1860
Station Removed To: Can't decipher

I am confused as these dates appear to be after retiral and long after he was there originally.

I then tried to look at ADM175/16 as this covered the dates that he seemed to be in ballycastle originally but can't actually find him.

Sorry for being a pest!!!!!
