Salmon family
R GILL
My Great Grandfather 'William Salmon' was a coastguard in Bannow ae Co. Wexford around the early 1900's and in Ballintoy, Co.Antrim pre 1900.
I have a photo of him in the unifom taken in Ballintoy with his family, but it is not dated. Does anyone know where i could find out where he was stationed. I think he finished his career in Wexford as his is listed as being in Bannow in the 1911 census.
Thanks

Hi

For this time period your best bet is to obtain his service record off the National Archives website (£3.50). Below is a link to all the William Salmon's, to find the right one you need to know his date and place of birth. The 'Date' column is the date of birth.

Hi

Based on Tony's findings that the father was also a Coast Guard, I checked the records, starting in 1846 for the Dublin CG District, where I duly found John Salmon working at Baldoyle CGS.

Working both backward and forwards I believe I have now traced John's CG career:

1 July 1824 appointed from the Revenue Establishment at Carlingford to Skerries CGS. (ADM 175/15 pdf 139)
10 Oct 1833 to Baldoyle
28 Aug 1846 to Wicklow Head
9 Aug 1853 Discharged - £36.5.10 (ADM 175/9 pdf 32)

What was interesting is that I also found in the Index Books a Peter and a Joseph Salmon, both appointed from Carlingford to the CG Service between 1821 and 1822. This suggests to me that there were a number of brothers, all of whom entered the CG Service, and that the family lived in the Carlingford area originally.

Having now done a little more research on some of the other members of the family I think there is a transcription error in one of Tony's entries. I found a James Salmon who was posted to Soldiers Point from HMS Centurion in 1859. John Potter at this time was Chief Boatman in Charge at Soldiers Point. According to the later Establishent Books James was born in Skerries on 11 July 1828.

I also found a Joseph, however he was born in Castletown, 23 May 1833 so likely to be a cousin, since at this time Joseph Salmon Snr. was working a Garnish CGS, Castletown.

Finally there was William, who was nominated from HMS Falcon to Seaham Harbour in 1858 - I'm assuming this is your William.

In the NA Seaman Records there is a Henry, born Howth 31 August 1837 so possibly another of Wlliams brothers.
