My great great grandfather whose name was Morgan I believe was stationed on Lambay. We think that at least two of his daughters, Ann Jane and Ellen were born on Lambay about 1835. Captain Morgan is believed to have come from Wales where his family were involved in shipping. From Lambay he was moved to Donegal Bay and we believe he lived in the Inver area. If anyone knows of Mr. Morgan and has any information I would be most grateful. I have a photo of the two ladies taken about 1860. His daughter Ellen married my great grandfather Bennet Mulreany in 1862 and her sister Ann Jane married his brother, my grand-uncle, Austin Mulreany. Thanks for reading. |

Hi, and welcome to the Forum. I'm not sure that Morgan was ever a qualified captain, but based on the information provided I did find a Thomas Morgan serving as Chief Boatman at Lambay CG Station, so assumed this was your man. Using the CG Establishment books I traced his entire CG career. He was first nominated to the service as a Boatman in July 1821, his place of residence at the time was North Yarmouth, Norfolk although he did give his place of birth as Fishguard, S Wales. He also gave his age as 30, married, with two children (ADM 175/99 pdf 66). I did try and find him in the Nomination Book for 1821, but without success. However, his first posting was to Baldoyle, Ireland. He then made the following moves: 5 July(Jan?) 1826 to Newcastle - promoted to Commissioned Boatman (ADM 175/15 pdf 165) 31 Aug 1828 to Warren Point, Newry 30 April 1829 to Newcastle 10 Oct 1829 to Baldoyle following his promotion to Chief Boatman (ADM 175 pdf 489) 5 July 1832 to Lambay 16 Nov 1839 to Mouth of Boyne 28 Aug 1846 to Dooran - promoted Chief Boatman in Charge (ADM 175/18 pdf 432) 18 December 1856 discharged on superan. allowance (ADM 175/19 pdf 299). Hope this is of interest and help. Martin Edited by crimea1854 on 28/09/2011 09:37 |

Hi Martin, Thanks for the information. I have not heard of Dooran CG Station. However there is a Doorin Point near Mountcharles in Co. Donegal where my family came from. I did not think that there was a CG Station here but perhaps there may have been. Could this be where Thomas was stationed in 1846? Doorin Point is at the northern tip of Donegal Bay an area that was notorious for smuggling in the 19th century and in prior centuries. Family lore says that he was a member of the Morgan family who had extensive shipping interests in Wales. I have a cousin following up on trying to get marriage certificates and these may give Mr. Morgan's first name. I will let you know how we get on. Again thanks. Cahir. Merged on 10/10/2011 22:30:39: Hi Martin, You mentioned that Thomas Morgan served as a Chief Boatman at Lambay and Chief Boatman in Charge at Doonan Point. This is the best and nearest I have ever got to my 2xgreat grandfather. Could you explain to me the progression in rank of a CG of that period!! i.e. from raw recruit upwards, so that I could see where his final rank of Chief Boatman in Charge comes in. A man always entered as a Boatman, it was then Commissioned Boatman, Chief Boatman and finally Chief Boatman in Charge. Martin |

Thanks to your assistance I have located where my 2 x great grandfather lived. I found him on Griffith's Valuation of Ireland for 1857 [a year after he retired from the CG] living in the townland of Rock, not far from Doorin Point where he servred as Chief Boatman in Charge. I have attached a photo that was taken in 1862 on the day of Ellen Morgan's wedding to my great grandfather. I thought that the photo may be of interest for the Photo Galleries. I am now on the hunt for further information on Thomas both after his retirement and before he joined the Coastguard. Will let you know if anything interesting turns up. In the attached photo the individuals are, l - r, Ann Jane Morgan, Anne Mulloy, Eileen Moore and Ellen Morgan.
