Hi, first time on site. Peter Pasco Green is my great-great-grandfather , born in St.Mawes in 1812, His parents Florence Lower and William Green come from several generations in St Mawes/St Just, although in the family he was always described as Irish, and an oyster merchant from Youghal (where he was posted as a coastguard)coming to England to escape the potato famine. His daughter Elisabeth Mary Green was born in Waterford in 1844 and came to England when she was 8, married a Cornishman and raised 12 children including my grandmother in Bohortha, St Anthony's. |

Hi Magnz, can't seem to open private message notified 14/3/2012 although did see one from 12/3/2012 about your great (3 )grandfether Peter Pasco Green. In fact one of his grandchildren went to NZ as Florence did - George Elger, born 5/6/1883, son of Elizabeth Mary Green and John Henry Elger, and one of my grandmother's brothers. He was a Private in WW1 -see Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph Record. He was single then but I think may have survived the war and married ?Alice Hilda and ?farmed in New Zealand. Good to hear about NZ rels but frustrating not being able to read messages! |

Hi, Thanks for finding George Elger's military records, and sorry to hear he did not did not remain in NZ after his period of service. Family tales of an NZ connection must therefore refer to Florence and her descendants,I wonder whether George had a chance to meet his aunt while he was there? She would be in her 70s by the time he came to NZ. The home area of George's parents was St Anthony in Roseland,a lovely Cornish peninsula opposite St.Mawes and the parish of St Just.and perhaps he went back there. You can see it on Google Earth- try searching Bohortha, St Mawes or Portscatho. I don't know when Peter Pasco Green died, but the article on this website," Serendipity" ,about 4 coast guards who went to the Crimea, states that early in 1856 he returned to his coastguard station and shortly afterwards retired and returned to St Mawes, where he was born, with his family. The parish records are probably in St.Just but I haven't found them yet - new to this! Hope this is helpful |
