John Carter Hawke
Bassoon
John Carter Hawke was described, at his marriage in 1904 as a 'coastguard of Preston, County Down' but by the 1911 census he was a coastguard stationed at Helvick Head, Waterford. Does anyone have any further information about JCH: for example, did he settle in the area?

Hi Bassoon

I wonder, have you downloaded his service record from the National Archives website? I ask because from the WW1 medal roll his only entitlement, The British War Medal, was sent to the CG at Bristol, which would suggest that he returned to England and may well have remained here.

Martin

PS: Since my post yesterday I have also checked the CG records available free online, and he has his record card in ADM 175/83A (pages 305 & 306 of 1026). From this you will see he was discharged on 31 March 1923 at Newquay, Cornwall on the reduction of the CG Service.

Martin: thank you for those extremely useful leads. I intend to get John Carter Hawke's RN service record from the N'tl Archives but, being new to all this, I shall follow up your other lead, though I suspect that you have extracted all that there is to be extracted! Though this may not be of particular relevance to you, JCH was on the right of the front row of the photo.

Best wishes
Neil.
