Researching my Martin family tree I have John Courtney married to Catherine Courtney (b1808) both listed as coastguards both born in Ireland. Any information about them would be very useful in locating where in Ireland my Martins came from. In the English 1851 census Catherine is with a presumed daughter Ellen aged 18 also listed as a coastguard visiting in Woolwich and is described as a widow. Any clues would be much appreciated. John Welcome to the Forum. From your post I have assumed that John Courtney married a Catherine Martin, sometime prior to 1833. On this basis I looked at the CG Establishment Books for Ireland prior to this date and came up with two John Courtne(a)ys. The first joined the CG service from the Revenue Cruiser Diligence on 19 November 1822, with a posting to Garnish. On 1 June 1829 he was transferred to Castlegregory from where he was discharged dead on 14 January 1834. The second was transferred to Ireland from Yealm CG Station on 20 July 1826, with a posting to How Strand. He was subsequently removed to Innisturk on 3 March 1831, then to Rosses Point on 21 November 1844, from where he was discharged dead on 22 March 1847. By coincidence there was a Commissioned Boatman named George Martin serving at Innisturk between 1843 and 1844. However, I'm inclined to think this no relation, because it is too late given Ellen's age. While this may not answer your question, I hope it has perhaps narrowed down the search area. Regards Martin |

Thank you Martin for this reply. The lot of the John Courtneys does not seem to have been a happy one! I shall take this away and ponder. Regards John |
