Coastguard births & marriages
Bhoy
Tony,

I saw the comment that you had info on coastguard marriages & births. I wonder if you could help me.

I'm interested in William Henry Chard, born in Cornwall, who was posted to Donegal about 1839. His first child was born there in Dec 1841. He was later posted to stations in Antrim, where he remained.

His first wife was Sarah Ann Mitchell, who was born in Wales. I don't know if they married before or after WH went to Ireland, but certainly I can't find anything in E&W before that point.

I'd be grateful if you could have a look for me. Given that William Henry was English, I'm guessing that the ceremonies would have been CoI.

Thanks.

I have searched my various records and the C.of I. Births and Marriages and have not found any mention of William Henry Chard and his family in Ireland. Bear in mind that a large proportion of these records were lost for ever in a disasterous fire in Dublin in 1922 duringthe Irish Civil War.
Chard Coastguards feature six times in the Web site British Coastguards in 1841 and 1891 Included is another William Henry Chard. Also there were a few other Chard families in Ireland.

You seem to already have a lot of info from a Rootschat thread ( http://www.rootsc...;topicseen ).

As you already know civil records (GRO) properly began in rural areas in 1870's - so for earlier records are church parish records but these are not uniformly kept (e.g C Of I were usually better than RC) and also many were destroyed in 1922. The following is a list of the records that are available online http://donegal.br...owdatabase For Donegal there doesn't seem to be any parish records for Chard.

The Rootchat thread confirms Wm. Chard in Antrim and there are two Griffith Valuation records for William Chard in Antrim ( http://www.askabo...arishname= both v. near Cushensdall CG station one inland and one on Red bay pier. Both are in the parish of Layd, Antrim.

In the GRO index

1. 1860 Wm. H. Chard marries Rose McNeill in parish of Layd, Antrim.
2. 1867 death of Rosanne Chard - recorded Ballycastle, Antrim - est birth 1832 ( look like Wm wife as there the name Rosanne McNeill is used on Rosetta Chard's birth record)
3. 1867 Marriage Wm. Henry Chard GRO. There is a another parish record for Wm. H. Chasd (widower) marrying Mary O'Coriseor (widow) in 1867 in Cushendun, Antrim.) and they seem to be both still alive in Cushendall according to 1901 census.

Also a 1867 Mary Ann Chard gets married in Antrim to Patrick Ward. It's possible she's a daugter of Wm. H. Chard - if she was born around 1849 - a copy of marriage cert would confirm. She has at least 4 children Mary (1871), Patrick James (1872), William Henry (1874) and John Thomas(1879). In 1866 there was a CG called Patrick Ward stationed at Torr Head, Ballycastle.

Tony,

Thanks for looking.

BPA,

Yes, what you've said is correct. (The new bit for me was the misspelt GRO entries. I hadn't known that WH's 3rd wife was a widow. I had known her only by her maiden name, Maginnis.)

And, yes, Mary Ann(e) was his daughter. I have already found records for Patrick Ward's coastguard service.

Again, thanks for your efforts.
