I am researching my wife's family line and her GGGrandfather was in the Navy and later served in the Coastguard in Cleggan, Tarbert, Burtonport and finally Bangor. His Service Record seems to show him as 'Boatn Fm' 1893-98 and then 'Comd Sta' (1900-06). as you know these records are hand written in tiny script and are quite difficult to interpret. Is there anywhere I can lookup the CG rank structure and try to get it right? Many thanks and regards............ |

The document below has a description of the ranks at the end of section 2. http://www.nation...54&j=1 Sometimes the handwriting/scanning make it hard to read so your 'Boatn Fm' may just be Boatman. Beside the official ranks - I have also seen in the establishment records 'Acting Chief Officer' and "Chf Boatman in Charge" |
