George Gammon

Hello Forum, was just reading the thread about John Dawson and read that he was sent to Blyth Haven in Sunderland. George Gammon was a retired Coastguard in 1881 working in Blyth Northumberland. I have no idea why he went to Blyth. Are they possibly the same place? could George have been posted from the Humber to Blyth before he retired.

From about 1850's there was a very big shipbuilding yard in Blyth which is in Northumberland. They built Royal Navy ships there. There was also coal mining in Cowpen. Not too far south is Sunderland which may be the nearest big city to Blyth.

Haven is an old word for "harbour" - so Blyth Haven might just be referring to the Port of Blyth.

I'm guessing but perhaps as a retired Navy person there was a better opportunity for occasional/casual work at a shipyard.
