Westport Coastguards:
margarb
FrownI have been unable to trace my Coastguard Gt Gt G'Father - Joseph COPPLESTONE - and family. His daughter was born at Westport abt 1841/2 .
I have tried all avenues to no avail - so now all I would really like is to be able to read about the lives of the Coastguards at Westport County Mayo for the years 1840-1875.
Thankyou..... Margaret

Hi Margaret, and welcome to the Forum.

Using the CG Establishment books I've traced Josephs' entire CG service history.

He was nominated on 2 March 1821 from Fowey in Cornwall, his first posting being to Studwalls CGS. I have tried to find this station without any success, so I don't know if it's in England or Ireland.

The following is a list of his subsequent moves and promotions:

19 Oct 1821 to Brandon, Ireland, on promotion to Commissioned Boatman.
31 Dec 1821 to Ballycastle
20 Nov 1822 to Claggen on promotion to Chief Boatman
31 Jan 1828 to Old Head
5 July 1830 to Island More
10 Oct 1833 to Pigeon Point/Old Head from where he was Discharged Dead on 27 Jan 1847. Having had a bit of a scull around the internet it would appear that Joseph fell to his death from the cliffs at Old Head, although this does need confirmation!

Hope this is of some help.

Regards Martin.

Hello Margaret,
A worthwhile site for you to visit is Rosmoney Coastguard station Co.Mayo which has been renovaed by James Cahil who has a keen interest in the stations history. Pigeon Point / Innislyre station ( a row of cottages) was closed down in 1875 and moved to Rosmoney / Carrowholly a newly built station, a few miles away in 1875.
The station is open to the public in the summer months and contains a small Coastguard museum.

It looks like the same Mr. Copplestone C.G.O. Old Head who provided answers to a Commission on Irish Fisheries in 1837.

Edit:

Baptism records for West Galway an Mayo (www.brsgenealogy.com) show the following Coppleston/Copplestone baptisms whose father name is Joseph. You would have to buy these records (or look them up in the NLI or C.of.I Library) to get Mothers's name to be sure they are from same family.

1828 Louisa Coppleston in the parish of Oughaval (C. of. I) - I think this parish includes Old Head.
1824 Mariane Copplestone in the parish of Clifden, Omey, Errislannan, More (this probably includes Cleggan)
1826 N/R Copplestone in the parish of Clifden, Omey, Errislannan, More

Church death record
1886 Louisa Copplestone in the parish of Oughaval

These may be unrelated but in the GRO for Westport (which would be closest to Old Head)

1847 Marriage of Louisa Copplestone
1855 Marriage of Catherine Coppleston
1866 Marriage of Harriet Copplestone
1886 Death of Louisa Copplestone (b 1803)

Another possible connection - in UK 1901 census there is a Richard Copplestone living in Dartmouth b abt 1833 Westport Ireland and who is a retired Chief Officer Coastguard (see also http://www.genuki...rds/C.html )

Thankyou so much for replies to my quest for answers to my elusive COPPLESTONE. I was aware that Joseph had died "at sea" but did not know when or how.
His wife's name was Louisa Mary (nee WILLIAMS) - I do not have birth - marriage - death certificates.
To prove the "Joseph" mentioned in your answers was in fact my Gt Gt G'Father I really need my Gt G'Ma - Elizabeth Parson COPPLESTONE's birth certificate. She was born Westport County Mayo Ireland. (as per her marriage certificate)
She migrated to Australia in 1864.
I shall now spend some time in perusing all the information you folk have advised me to look into. Thankyou. Margaret.....
