Robert HERD

Hi
I have Robert HERD B:1819 Aberdeen as a coastguard in Ireland
@ Dunny Cove 1847-1856;
then @ Rachley Aug 1856-Dec 1858;
then @ Ross'es Point Dec 1858 - Jul 1861;
then @ Mullahmore Jul 1861 - ?;
then @ Donaghadee 1863 - ?.
These were from Coastguard Establishment Ireland lists 1847 - 1861 & 1861-1865. Great source!

I am interested in proof of a marriage between Robert HEARD and Catherina O'CONNELL 1839 in Cobh RCC.
Then her possible death after 1858.
Known children which fit: Robert B:1848, Clonakilty; Jeremiah B:1857, Sligo and George B:1858 also in Sligo. Latter 2 on IGI.

Then the next marriage between Robert HERD and Isabella KYLE possibly in Co.Donegal in 1863 (church Wedding).
There are subsequent children on IGI esp one "Isabella HERD" born in 1867 Donaghadee to the above.

The stations, places of childrens birth etc make sense but i now need 100% proof.

1/ On any of your databases, do you have any of these marriages or baptisms?
2 / Any ideas as to what HMS Tarharm (sp?) was which where Robert came from prior to Dunny Cove in 1847 as per above source pg 72?
3/ Are there any further Coastguard records after 1865? Specifically any ideas where i can find what Robert did after Donaghadee Station in 1863 before according to the Seaman's record (ADM 188/61) he was pensioned off the Vanguard in 1873. Also where might the Vanguard have been located - Ireland or England?
5/ Date or place of death unknown.
6/ Are there any photos/ drawings of the above stations in those times?

His son Robert landed up in Plymouth also as a Coastguard.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gaye, and welcome to the Forum.

On the question of bdm I will leave this to Tony.

Re the name of the ship from which Robert was nominated for the CG Service I believe this to be HMS Tartarus. She is interesting because she was one of the very first steam paddle gun vessels built for the RN. Launched in 1834, she had a crew of 80, and was initially armed with 2-9pds, which were subsequently changed to 1-32pdr mounted on a pivot, and 2-32pdr carronades. From 1843 until 1847 she was commanded by Acting Captain James Wolfe, and operated off the coast of Ireland.

To find out more about Robert's early naval career you would need to visit the NA at Kew and consult Tartarus's Ships Description Books (ADM 38/9145 & 9146). This should provide a physical descrition as well as list of any prior ships he may have served on.

On the question of filling in the gaps in your research to the point of his retirement, you need to consult the CG Ships Establishment Books for the Kingsdown District. These are part of the ADM 175 series or records that can be downloaded from the NA. (ADM 175/ 39 - 43 inclusive). If you wait till the whole document is downloaded it is indexed at the back.

You should not get confused. Although HMS Vanguard is referred too, he was still working at a land based CG Station. The ships were HQ vessels, and only really used for admin. and training purposes, although in times of a national crisis would form part of the Navy's inshore squadron for defence.

One piece of information you may not have, is that during the Crimean War Robert was one of those CG Men called back to the RN, where he served on HMS Duke of Wellington, for which he was awarded the Baltic Medal that was sent to Sligo CGS on 2 April 1857.

Hope this has been of help.

Hello Martin and thank you for your response

You have certainly cleared up a lot of the uncertainties with regards to the name of the 1st ship which was impossible to read. And the details - as yet i have not researched them so any snippets are welcome.

As for the medal and details surrounding it - i had no idea and that type of snippet is always a cherry on the top. I gather you must be an expert seeing your login name - what is the source please and do you have any further information regarding this particular aspect?

I have only used the two Coastguard Establishment books 1845-1865 which obviously "missed" information for those years. Apart from the references you have suggested for later periods, any suggestions for between 1845-1863 please?

I'll start the next trawl through the NA this evening.

Thank you once again for your help.

I'm in the process of compiling a database of all those CG men who served in the RN during the Crimean War. This is based on information contained in the various Ships' Description & Muster Books, cross referenced with the Baltic Medal Roll. I'm afraid that I have not done as much work on it recently as perhaps should Frown

This particular medal was issued unnamed to men in the RN & RM, so unless your ancestor had his privately engraved your chances of finding it, always assuming it still survives, are slim.

For your earlier missing years I would suggest that you visit the 'Articles' section of the site, and particularly the 'ADM Index Project', from which you will be able to identify which records you need to consult, and where each station can be found in that record.

Hi Tony

Thank you very much for the baptisms for Robert Herd and 2nd wife Isabella. I didn't know about the William.

Pity there were none for Robert Herd and 1st wife Catherine O'Connell from 1839 - 1862. I have the Jeremiah (1857) and George (1858) but not Robert (1848) Dunny Cove and still searching to see if there were possibly any earlier ones as there was a huge gap between marriage and 1st child.

Thanks once again and thanks for this site - what an incredible treasure trove of information.

Regards

Gaye

There are two good sites for BMD records
Irish Family History Foundation - http://www.brsgen... but there are county specific sub-sites which allow you to search by parish. In this case for Donegal and Cork North & East.
http://donegal.br...ealogy.com, http://corknorthe...ealogy.com
These databases have used parish register and other information. Once a promising record is found you can buy the full record which may provide a few more details. Be warned it is easy to buy useless records hoping for a shortcut..

Indexes of GRO Civil registration of BMD from 1845-1958 can be searched as part of http://pilot.fami...tml#p=home just select "Collection - Ireland" in the results.

Fom the BRS Cork North & East site - there are marriage records for
Robert Heard 1839 in Cobh RC
Catherine O'Connell 1839 in Cobh RC

There were 8 Catherine O'Connell marriages in Cork N&E in 1839 but only one in Cobh RC so you may consider buying the record to see address and possibly First name of respective fathers although this is not always entered.

From same database there is a birth record which may be relevant
George Herd 1842 - Father name Robert Parish Cobh RC. If you buy the full record you can find out the mother's name.

In the IFHF Donegal BRS database - there are marriage records for
Robert Herd 1863 Ballyshannon Presbyterian
Isabella Kyle 1863 Ballyshannon Presbyterian

So again it is likely these records refer to same marriages especially as from the GRO index there are similar marriage records for
Isabella Kyle 1863 Ballyshannon registration distrcit.
Robert Herd 1863 Ballyshannon registration district.

The full record can be bought from the GRO office.

From the Civil registration, you can get the same info as the earlier post about the Herd children born from 1842 onward. It provide some extra details
Janette Herd was born in 1871 but also died in 1871.
Isabelle Herd born in 1868 (possibly 1867 registered in Newtonards Co. Down) died in Wexford in 1954.
William Herd born in 1873 died in Wexford (Enniscorthy) in 1946
Hannah Herd married in 1894 Wexford

Also another possibility
Isabella Herd b. 1836 died 1912 in Wexford - registered in Gorey same as where births were registered.
