Hello, William Donovan is my Great-grandfather. He initially joined the RN, was based in Liverpool/Birkenhead and served on the Cumberland (service medal available). At some stage around 1880 he transferred to the coastguard and was based in Galway (he lived in Fairhill, I presume in or near the CG station). I have a copy of the 1911 census for my great grandmother and their youngest daughter still living at home in 49 Fairhill Road. This probably doesn't coincide with the current 49 as the Claddagh was 'redeveloped' in the 1930s William married (abt 1871) Bridget Hurley (from Skibereen) and over the next 15 or so years had 10 children (all boys except for the last girl) -6 died without children, only one son had any children. One of William's sons Patrick, married and served on the HMT Lotos in 1916, died in service and is buried in Gosport. William was born in Kinsale I estimate around 1847-48. If there was any information available about his time in Galway it would be greatly appreciated. One anecdote about William, he purchased a grave space, sadly for the burial of his eldest son, however, after trawling through the grave records it turns out that the child is buried (with three brothers) in the wrong grave. |
