I am interested to know about the Coastguard Station that was based at Soldiers Point Dundalk, Co. Louth. I grew up there in the 1930 s. It consisted of 9 houses, the centre one being for the person in charge. I often wondered what exactly were their duties and are any of their names recorded. I remember as a child seeing a large aliminum sign proclaiming that vacancies were available in the Coastguard Service. I am sorry I did not keep it but the last I remember of it was it being used by my mother to patch up a hole in the chicken run. There was also a semi circular small patah of land enclosed by a low wall and we called it the Flagstaff. I believe that the original houses were single story but in 1930 they were 2 story. Hi I am also interested in the Dundalk Station,as I have a silver medal from John Hynds awarded 6th May 1858,later than the other gallant men who went to the aid of the "MARY STODDART". I cant find what part he played in the rescue, and why his was awarded later then the others, and if anyone can help I would be very glad to know. He is written up clearly enough in the "Gallantry Lifeboat " book. Re your querry,if you look up the Mary Stoddart ion Google you will see a lot about this wreck and the station and a post card photo of the Point. Regards |

Fairline We really need Roger (willoughr) to log-on. He is our resident expert on all things 'Lifesaving', if he doesn't have the answer, no one does! Martin |

Fairline, Captain J. Hynds (or Hinds as he was known here) of the schooner Venture of Dundalk, volunteered to cox one of the rescue boats involved in the attempt to save the crew of the Mary Stoddart. He was one of the nine awarded silver medals by the RNLI for their efforts. I have emailed you, and can supply you with a detailed account of the event, all the best, Charley |
