Could someone tell me the history of this station. My great grandfather, William Broe according to his service record served here between November 1904 and February 1910. I always thought that the building of which only the ruins remain was where he and his family, including my grandfather lived and worked. I have recently read that this station was built in 1910 before being destoyed in 1920. If this wasn't the coastguard station where would it have been? Hope someone can help. Mike Broe |

Hello Mike, The O.P.W. (Office of Public Works) had site plans for a new station dating from 1874 till 1877. The station was erected in 1878/9. The Coastguards had a presence in the area going back to "1/2 Acre of land at Gurrenanasig. The land is used by the crew as gardens. Lease 1824". In the early years of the service it is possible that Coastguards lived in small rented cottages adjacent to a larger Boat-house which could have had over-head accommodation for a leading boatman and his family. William Broe would have lived in the now ruined building before he was moved to Rosse's Point station in Co.Sligo. Tony |

Thanks Tony, This goes to prove not to believe all you read and to check your facts. I felt a connection when I visited the station last year. What a glorious playground the children must have had with that beautiful beach. Thanks again. Mike |
