William Enright born Ireland 1804
j m harvey
I am trying to trace the service history of William Enright. He is on the Genuki UK list for British Coastguards 1841-1901. His Children were born in Mutford & Lothingland, Norfolk & Kessingland Suffolk; (1837-1840); Great Clacton and Walton, Essex (1846-1850). His older children were born in Sussex as his wife came from Newhaven I think that he may have been stationed there. How can I find out more?

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.

To trace a mans service history you have to use the Establishment Books in the ADM 175 series of documents held by the National Archives. They have recently removed the link to these form their home page, but after a bit of digging around I have finally managed to find them (link below).

These documents are very large, so broadband is essential; the documents themselves are free.

Starting from a date and place you already know, the record will then provide details of the CG stations he was transferred from and then to. You just move from station to station until you have established his entire career. To give you a head-start I looked at Kessingland CGS in ADM 175/6 (page 633 of 779) and found William rated as a Commissioned Boatman.

If you run into any problems, or you need some advice, please do come back.

Regards

Martin
