Hi . I am a new member, living in Australia.I came across this site by accident and have been pleasantly surprised. I found a birth entry for my Great grandfather, Edwin Thomas Coit b, 27th August 1870 to William Coit and his wife Mary ann Hooper. I already had some of this information and it fits in nicely. Then I found an item about the "Vanguard". It listed William Coit on it's roster from 7th July 1875 till 20th August 1875. It has his rank as Bn and station as Port Kennigoe. Any suggestions on what I do next ?? I would like to find more information on his job and when he died. Would appreciate any help !!!!!![]() |

Hi Rosemary, and welcome to the Forum. Since William was serving in the Royal Navy after 1873 I did an online search of Seaman's Records on the National Archives (NA) website. This returned only one likely candidate, a William Coit born in Devonport on 17 November 1840. On the assumption this is your man you could download this record, but it would only provide details of his service from 1873 to his retirement from the navy. http://www.nation...ultcount=2 I also did a search of the 1861 census, and found a William Coit (b.1840) on HMS Donegal (ships no. 600), rated as an Able Seaman. Just out of interest I also checked the medal roll for the 2nd China War, and again found William serving as a Boy 1st Class on HMS Calcutta (date of birth confirmed as 17/11/1840). He was involved in the actions at Fatsan Creek, Canton 1857 and Taku Forts 1858, earning these clasps to his medal. He also appears on the medal roll aboard HMS Coromandel. Perhaps of real interest to you is that I also have the reference for his naval service from his entry in the RN until 1873. His Continuous Service number was CS24113. Working on the assumption that this is your William, you could order a copy of this document online from the NA using the above reference, and the series reference ADM 139. If you do require any more help or advice do please ask. Regards Martin |
