I am trying to find information about Philip Riddle. Born in Illogan Cornwall 1807 I believe he worked as a Coastguard before 1843. He had two daughters born in Mayo, Elizabeth in 1836 and Frances in 1838. He had returned to England by 1843 when his daughter Emily was born. Any information gratefully received. |

Hi Susan, and welcome to the Forum. I have managed to track Phillip Riddle for the whole of his career in the Coastguard Service. He entered on the 2 March 1833, unfortunately there is no information as to where he was previously; because there is no name of a ship given in the records I can only assume it was not from the Royal Navy. His first station was Mynish (Roscolleigh) in Ireland, and on the 21 July 1838 he was transferred to Elmly Ferry near Whitstable, Kent. On the 6 September 1845 he appears to have been granted a transfer to Teignmouth, on the grounds of 'Family ill health'. He was transferred again on the 3 July 1851, this time to Garrance Bay, Falmouth. This was to be his last move, because on 4 November 1851 he was discharged with a pension of £15.4.0 per annum. I'm afraid these are only raw dates, but from this it may be possible to use the 1841 & 1851 census, now knowing where he was, to perhaps fill in further family details. Hello Tony, Thanks for contacting me. Yes, I think I have if it is the one I saw though some of it I didn't understand. It read Philip Riddle CON 1807 (I think this might mean that he was born in Cornwall in 1807?) Illogan. I am just re- reading my notes and I think it makes a bit more sense. I know that he was widowed by 1851 and that his children Elizabeth and Frances were brn in Ireland. Emily was born in Kent (Milton) and Philip in 1848 St Nicholas Devon. The odd thing is that my husband's great great grandmother Eliza Riddle is not mentioned. I know that Philip was her father and that she was born in 1845 in or around Teignmouth. I found her in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, living with her aunt Ann (Philip's sister) and her family. So it looks as if she was not living with the rest of the family for some reason. Many thanks, again. Sue |
