I am trying to research the life of the above who is my wife`s great,great,grandfather.I believe he served at Cahore C.G.station and possibly others from about 1850 to 1865.He moved to Sennen C.G. station in Cornwall with his Irish wife and children and in 1868 he was awarded a Bronze Medal for his involvement in the rescue concerning the lighter `Devon` off the Cornish coast.There may be a Royal Naval connection in him joining the Irish C.G. service.He retired to Portsmouth in 1881 and died there in 1910.

Hi Alan, and welcome to the Forum.

I did a online search of the National Archives registers of RN Seamans Service, and believe I found your man (see link below). This information can be downloaded for a fee of £3.50.

www.nationalarchi...ultcount=1

What surprised me was that this document is from the ADM 139 series, which cover RN service from 1853 until 1872. Until now I had only been aware that the ADM 188 series were available online, which covers service from 1873. If all these records find there way onto the internet this will certainly make remote research much easier!

Hi Alan

I'm glad I had the right man, from the information you supplied I thought I had, but I have been wrong in the past on what appeared a certainty Frown

The best person to help you with marriage and bap. records is Tony (The Boss!). The only other records that might be worth consulting are in the ADM 175 series (Coastguard Establishment Books), from these it should be possible to work out which CG stations he actually served at, but for this you will have to visit the National Archives at Kew.

From the date of signing on he was in the RN at the time of the Crimea War. If you can email me his record I will check which ships he served on, and if any were in the conflict I will consult the medal roll to confirm any entitlement.

Regards

Martin
