My GGG Grandfather William Bishop was born in Kent 1814. From 1851 he was a coastguard in Essex. However, sometime in the 1830's he must have been stationed in Ireland for several years. A son William was born 1839 and Thomas 1841. Later census records suggest both were born in Cork. He may also have married his wife Lucy while in Ireland as I can find no record in England. Has anyone come across William in Cork or elsewhere ? Can you suggest any records I can access to trace him? |

Peter welcome to the Forum. Can I suggest that you visit the National Archives at Kew and consult the ADM 175 series of records (Coastguard Estabishment Books) that are held on microfilm. If you were to start with a known location for your man William, e.g. Essex in 1851, this should reveal details of where he was transferred from, and subsequently to. From this it should be possible to trace his service in the CG both backwards and forwards. The 'How to...' guide for finding a Coastguard in the Estabishment Books, which can be consulted at Kew, is 5j. Elsewhere on this site is an explanation of the Irish records held in the ADM 175 series, which would be well worth a read. Regards Martin |

Hi Martin Thanks for your advice. After reading the articles on ADM 175 I am hopeful thet I can make some useful progress with William as and when I can get to Kew - might be some time though, so I may have to find a researcher. Many Thanks Peter |

Dear Peter, It is a long time since your last post, so I hope you receive this. I am descended from Lucy Bishop, from a previous marriage. She was born Lucy Burge and married Stride. Look forward to your reply Paul Aston (Hong Kong) |

Paul welcome to the Forum. I suspect your best chance of contacting Peter is via a direct PM using the PM button at the bottom left hand side of his original post. Since 2008 the Coastguard Establishment Books I refer to in my post are now available from the National Archives website as free downloads (ADM 175 is the document series). I certainly traced William Bishop from his appointment to the CG Service in 1833 with a first posting to Hove ( ADM 175/6 pdf250) to 1849 and suspect I could have continued until he left the service. Additionally the subscription site Find my Past has a Merchants Seaman's Ticket for him that gives his date of birth as 2 Oct 1813 and provides a physical description. Should you require any help in navigating these documents please let me know. Martin |
