achilbeg coastguard station
roy jones
I am looking for any record of Edward Wallace, born in Kent, who served on Achilbeg station in the 1870s was married to Ellen (manning) Wallce born on achill island.

Will there be a list anywhere of coast guards serving on these stations.

Tony
Record of Baptism of Alexander William of Edward and Ellen Wallace.
Baptised 10 November 1874. Father Coastguard at Achilbeg station. Achill Parish. Co.Mayo.
As far as I am aware there are no lists of Coastguards at stations. A local historian record could be a source.

Roy,

I have just found your enquiry.
I am looking for more information on Andrew Manning born 1825(?) Achill (?) and his son William Manning born 1855 in Achill (?) and William's siblings. Both Andrew and William were coastguards.

I note Ellen Manning was born in Achill. Do you know how Ellen, Andrew and William were related?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Phil welcome to the Forum.

To save possible duplication of effort, or providing information you already have, what have you on the family so far?

Andrew was born 3 July 1807, Portsmouth, Hampshire.

Hi Martin,

I am a Watford, very much British (well probably Flemish blood as well). It is via my wife's family -the Finns of Mayo and the Regans of Waterford that I am now onto the Mannings.

The William ManningI am researcing is

William Manning: Service Record from National Archives

William joined on 5th November 1873, aged 18, and signed on for ten years. His service number was 15559G(?), he was between 5ft 2” and 5ft 4.5”, straight brown hair, hazel eyes and fresh complexion. The only scar was a cut on corner of right eye.

His stated date of birth was 5 November 1855 in Achill, Mayo. He died, a widower, on 17 April 1893 at Burton Bradstock Dorset

On his marriage certificate in 1882 he stated father as "Andrew Manning-Coastguard Pensioner" so presumably alive, which questions, although of course still possible, Martin's "Andrew was born 3 July 1807, Portsmouth, Hampshire" i.e bacame a father aged 48 and aged 75 at date of wedding.

It is the Achill connection of Ellen Wallace (nee Manning) which makes her a 'person of interest' her relationship, if any to William and any other siblings.

Any clues or information will be appreciated!

Regards

Using the CG Establishment Books in ADM 175 I pieced together Andrew Manning CG service record.

Nominated to the CG Service on 29 Sept 1831 at Portsea RN(?), Nom. No 3006. He was originally posted to Birling Gap, but does not look to have taken the appointment, because on 3 Oct 1831 he is at Holywell (175/5 pdf 267).
17 Jan 1832 to North Arran (175/16 - 211)
11 Sept 1839 to Cashleh Bay (175/18 - 198)
9 Oct 1839 to Old Head (175/18 - 226)
10 May 1844 to Rosscolleigh/Mynish (175/19 - 232)
22 March 1850 to Achilbeg (175/19 - 246)
18 Oct 1855 to Kilcummin
29 July 1856 discharged to pension on £18/4/- per annum.

While at Mynish he was issued with a Seamen's Ticket No. 133,952. This has his date of birth as 3 July 1807, Portsmouth. 5' 6'' tall, fair complexion, sandy hair and grey eyes, crucifix on rt arm, first went to sea as a Boy in 1825, served 5 years 5 months in Royal Navy.

Based on the above, there are pension papers held at the National Archives that I am 90% certain are for him; these are in ADM 29/57/23. Unfortunately they cannot be downloaded, but you can order copies online.
