I have just received a copy of the Marriage certificate of James Lyons and Sophia Griffiths which took place3 on 2nd June 1859. The witnesses were Thomas Griffith and William Griffith. (Interesting to note that there is no s at the end of the name) It would be appreciated if I could have the full service record of Thomas Griffith as I believe he served in Miltown Malbay in Co Clare as well as in Achill and in Lettermore. Thanks to the map I have now located the position of the station on Lettermore and will visit it soon to see what remains of it. Is there any record of Thomas Griffiths's service in Fishguard, to the name of his wife or to details of other members of his famly. Leslie Edited by leslielyons on 07/07/2010 00:14 |

Leslie Thomas was nominated to the CG Service on 14 March 1821, with a first posting to Mutton Island No.2 CG Station. His record shows that he was nominated from Fishguard, however, unless he was an unlisted 'Extra-man', it is unlikely that he had any previous service. He then made the following moves: 13 March 1822 to Seafield (Kilkee) 5 January 1824 to Rathlin Island 1 November 1824 to Achill Head 31 January 1828 to Keem (Achill Island) 5 July 1832 to Belderig 9 December 1837 to Freagh Point 13 June 1844 to Recorders Quay (Fair Hill) 13 December to Kilkeran (Lettermore) 19 June 1857 Promoted to Chief Boatman in Charge at Lettermore Retired 31 December 1862. Unfortunately very few records of the period make mention of the families, but with the above it should help you narrow down search areas in other records e.g. Church Baptisms. Regards Martin |

It's been a long time since I visited this site. I wonder if there is any more information on Thomas Griffith and of James Lyons my gt grandfather who married Thomas Griffiths' s daughter, Sophia , on 2nd June 1859. I have been unable to trace my ancestry beck further than my gt grandfather and wonder if perhapd he may also have served in the Coastguard service which would be a way through which he could have met.
