I've been looking at the list men who served as coastguards at Southsea Castle, in particular the entry for David GILES. The writing is hard to decipher but it looks like Naidway - was there such a station? If not can anyone come up with a better suggestion? Many thanks |

Hi It's actually Hardway (Portsmouth Harbour) and can be found on ADM 175/6 pdf 289. Martin |

Thank you - that would make sense. He later transferred from Hayling Island to ??Governor WV 272. Can you tell me what that means, please? btw I just love the doodle on that page. |

I feel fairly confident that WV is 'Watch Vessel', which in this case was moored on the River Weeke, and the 272 is the folio page number; see 175/7 pdf 553. Martin |

Thank you - you're a star. I'm just starting to find my way round these records. |
