Hi Tony I downloaded this service record of John King from the PRO at Kew. I don't know if it is my G Grandfather the birth date is two years earlier than I thought.I would only be sure if I could trace a marriage or details of his parents. I don't really understand the record,i.e. C.S. engagement-July 1868 and in the right hand column F.E 1856? From my man's childrens D o B's One child born in Sligo 1870 and three children born in Ballyshannon between 1876-1879. I know my man was definitely at Ballyshannon Station in May 1876. I als know that he was described as a naval pensioner with an address in Limerick in 1900. I am trying to arrange a visit to Kew next month. Do you have any idea where I might find details of his parents or marriage in the records regards Jim Sullivan |

Jim, CS = Continuous service, the number being his "Service" number. If you look here: - http://www.nation...ssmethod=5 you should be able to identify which book he is recorded in, for example, a man with a CS number 7567 would be recorded here: - http://www.nation...ssmethod=5 ADM 139/76 7501 - 7600 Please note that if the CS number was 7567A then this would be the document: - http://www.nation...ssmethod=5 ADM 139/476 7501A - 7600A "F.E 1856" = First Engagement in 1856, in other words his first eggagement in the Navy was in that year. It is unlikely that there will be any information on his paerents in the ADM documents. Your best bet would be through census records. All the Best Hugh Edited by HughVaugh on 20/02/2008 10:20 |
