William Carpenter - Greystones Delgany Approx 1830's
JZC
Hello I am new to this forum so I hope I have followed correct procedure

I am looking for information regarding my 4th Great Grandfather William Carpenter who was born in Exton Hampshire around 1807. His wife was Ann. At some point he moved to Ireland to Delgany and on the baptism records for his daughter Amelia in Delgany 1837 his occupation is a Waterguard. At some point he and his family left Delgany and moved to Chivelstone in Devon where he became a coastguard at Prawle Point.
All his children were born in Delgany so he must have stayed until at least 1848 and on the 1851 census he is in Devon
His children were:-

Amelia Charlotte Carpenter
1837 – 1897

George Carpenter
1840 –

Susan Carpenter
1842 –

Elizabeth Carpenter
1844 –

Caroline Carpenter
1846 –

Francis Carpenter
1848 –

I am keen to find out any information regarding him ideally wondered why he came to Delgany and why he then left to move to Devon
Many thanks
Jackie

Jackie welcome to the Forum.

William was nominated to the Coastguard Service on 14 March 1834, from HMS Undaunted (1807) with a first posting to Greystokes CG Station (ADM 175/19 pdfs 27 & 28). I suspect he joined Undaunted around 1830 when she set sail for Mauritius, the Cape of Good Hope and Trincomalee. She paid off her crew on 15 February 1834 on her return to England.

On 30 Oct 1846 he was promoted to Commissioned Boatman remaining at Greystokes; then on 4 October 1848 was transferred to Prawle, where he was discharged dead on 25 July 1862 (ADM 175/7 pdf 443).

Additional to this he was one of the 2600 CGs who saw active service during the Crimean War, where he served on HMS Gladiator and HMS Majestic (ships no.29), for which he was awarded the Baltic Medal.

Regards Martin

PS: found the following extract from ADM 27/23/161 ships allotment book for Undaunted. These record who part of a man's wages were to be paid to while he was at sea, it is possible that the original document may contain additional information:

Pages 722-723: William Carpenter; Ship's name: HMS Undaunted; Pay book number: SB 109; Rank: Ordinary Seaman; Relation: Wife, Ann.
