Woodleys
sullyschoice
Hi.

I am the great great grandson of Thomas Woodley who was the chief Coastguard in Howth in the late 1800s. He was originally from Plymouth area in UK. I have found a census record of him in Fenit, co
Kerry and found a Frank Woodley, coastguard in Brandon, co Kerry. I am wondering if Thomas and Frank are related.

Any suggestions about where I might get more information about their service records.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.

I did find a Thomas Woodley in Ireland in the 1860's, and based on his date of birth (2 March 1836) there are two service records that can be purchased from the National Archives, one pre, the other post 1873.

I would be inclined to get this one first, just to check you have the right man, then if satisfied buy the next:

Pre 1873 record:

I know for a fact that this man served on HMS Pelorus and was awarded the New Zealand Medal, which was sent to him in 1870, but he may also have served on HMS St George during the Crimean War, receiving the Baltic Medal.

Regarding Frank, are you able to provide a date when he was working in Brandon?

Hi Frank

Thanks for the quick reply.

Frank is listed in Brandon in the 1911 Census. He is married to Mary Anne. Both are listed as Church of England.

Thanks again

Since Frank Woodley was working in 1911 I assumed that he could have been on the WW1 medal roll. There is only one man of this name, who is shown as a Leading Boatman, and therefore likely to be a Coastguard, his place of birth is Brixham in 1873. His service record is below:

To establish if he is a relation of Thomas you would need to do some genealogical detective work.

Hope this helps
