Commissioned Boatman?

New Member Posts: 7 Joined: 03/04/2010	I am researching my partner's family history and have come across a John Elwood who was a commissioned boatman in the Coast Guards in Essex. Can anyone tell me what this position involved? In 1841 his occupation was mariner on the census. Would he have been likely to have been in the Royal Navy before entering the Coast Guard?
