Some Co. Down Coastguard Family Headstone Inscriptions.

BOYD. Sacred to the memory of Henry Boyd. Coast Guard of Newcastle who departed this life 20th February 1847 aged 56 years. Also Martha his deeply lamented wife who departed this life 9thMay 1845.

CLUNES. This stone was erected by Margaret Clunes in memory of her beloved husband William Clunes, a native of Inverness, Scotland who died at the Coastguard station of Cranfield, the 19th.May 1837 aged 37 years.

FORD. Erected by Wm. Ford. Strangford Coastguard in memory of his son Alexander Joseph Ford

born 11th February 1842. died 10th.February 1848.

Reference; Old Court Chapel, Strangford.


FRENCH. Erected by Amelia French to the memory of her husband John French. Coast Guard, native of Portsmouth, who died 6th November 1860. Also their son William Henry who died 12th November 1858.

HEARLE. To the memory of William Maitland Hearle, Lieut. R.N. and Chief Officer of Coast Guard at Ballyhalbert, who died the 25th June 1841. Aged 41 years. This stone is erected by his affectionate widow.

McCULLUM. Erected by Charles McCullum, Coast Guard.. To the Memory of his infant son John, who died 8 October 1856. "Suffer little children to come unto me" Jesus.

McCULLEN. Erected by James J.McCullen in memory of his sister Eveline who died 14th.June 1857 aged 1 year. Also his father James McCullen of H.M. Coast Guard who died 16th.February 1873 aged 74 Years. Also his brother Francis Groome McCullen R.N. Commander of H.M. Cruiser ‘Squirrel’ who died 11th.October 1888 aged 36 years. Also his mother Ellen McCullen who died 7th.March 1890 aged 74 years. Also the above James Jocelyn McCullen R.N. late Chief Divisional Officer of Coast Guards, who died 20th.April 1904 aged 64 years. Also his sister Elizabeth K. Rule who died 14th.November 1921 aged – years.  Margaret M.McCullen died 9th.August 1947.

McDONALL.  17th.January 1793.  Fell by a ball discharged by an unknown murderer. Alexander McDonall. Revenue Officer. His remains rest here. In his office he was truly just. His age when deprived of life was 26 years.

McKENNEY. Erected by Philip McKenney, Coastguard in memory of his daughter Sarah McKenney who died 16th.March 1857 aged 22 years. Also the above Philip McKenney who died 19th.May 1862 aged 58 years.

NELSON.  Erected by William Nelson Coast Guard Officer in memory of his wife who departed this life 13th.March 1842 aged 46 years. Also two of his children viz. William and Maria who both died young. Also the above William Nelson who departed this life 3rd.June1851 aged 58 years.

STEWART. Erected by Hugh Stewart. Coastguard in memory of his son James Stewart who departed this life the 7th.February 1843 aged 26 years. The above Hugh Stewart who departed this life on 3rd.October 1845 aged 46 years. Also his grandson Frederick Haslett who departed this life the 7th.October 1855 aged 12 months. Martha the beloved wife of Hugh died October 1869 aged 72 years. Walter Sampson died 9th.May 1877. Anne Jane Sampson his mother who died 28th.January 1896 aged 66 years. Richard Sampson who died the 18th.June 1898 aged 69 years.

STRAINS. In memory of Elizabeth Strains the wife of John Strains, Coast Guard Officer, who departed this life 2nd.September 1843 aged 50 years. Also here lieth Louisa Strains, the daughter of John and Elizabeth who departed this life 1st.January 1848 aged 21 years. Also the remains of Mrs. Capt. James Porter of Portaferry who departed tis life 26th.February 1856 aged 62 years.
